The Mercy Seat

Enter most Salvation Army worship halls, and one of the first things that you are likely to see is the mercy seat.

In a very simplistic way the Mercy Seat can be regarded as a public prayer space.

The mercy seat is a very old idea, found first in the Old Testament, where it was the holy place where God's presence was believed to be and where he communicated with his people.

The mercy seat is treated with great respect in Salvation Army corps, and although it does not hold any special spiritual properties - whenever and wherever a person meets with God, that is a 'mercy seat'.
